UAV / UAS

Applications: Range / Relay extension, high data throughput for dismounted troops

Multi-antenna, MIMO (multi input multi output) systems have been proven effective in improving the reliability, range and data rate of ground based communication systems.

For tier 0 & 1 UAS that use omni directional antennas and unsophisticated ground stations, our approach can provide 8x to 20x improvement in the areal-spectral-efficiency in a multi-UAS operational scenario where the UAS are operating within a given bandwidth and are interfering with one another. For tier 2 UAS (i.e. Predator), the improvement relative to the existing CDL and TCDL systems being used will be in the range of 6x to 15x. Our approach relies on improving the spectral efficiency of each link while at the same time controlling the interference seen at the receiver when the UAS operate in close proximity to one another. The Silvus radios have the capability of full networking between multiple UAVs and ground stations. This type of multihop networking is enabled by the fact that multiple antenna technology can allow omni directional coverage in situations where traditional radios would require directional antennas that limit networking options.

Airborne experiments were carried out at Camp Roberts, CA, under the Tactical Networked Topology (TNT) experiments hosted by the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) and U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM). One radio was placed with antennas roughly 7 feet off the ground, and the other was flown on a Cessna flying at an elevation of 12,000 feet and a speed of roughly 150 mph, mimicking the flight pattern of a UAV. Using 6 dBi gain antennas, the MNM radio delivered upwards of 1.5 Mbps at a distance of 40 Km with 0.4 Watt power at each antenna input.

Recent air to ground tests on a LearJet 55 carried out by a third party commercial customer using the Silvus radio were able to deliver 30 Mbps user throughput at a distance of 25 miles and 2 Mbps at 60 miles, all at an elevation of 37,000 feet using a 4x4 system with 4 Watt EIRP from each antenna.
